summer capsule closet

Happy summertime! This is really when my creative mind and the fun aspects of my closet get ready to work. Summer is honestly the best time to start experimenting with your wardrobe because there truly are no rules or guidelines. This is all about you! Today, I wanted to talk about the perfect summer capsule closet. What are the basics I need? What are the summer colors to wear, and what colors should I stay away from? What even is a capsule closet? Let’s talk about it!

What is a capsule closet?

Also referenced as a capsule wardrobe, a capsule closet contains all of the basics one might need to have the minimalist look. The perfect about of basics that can be paired many different ways with various different accessories. Typically, the quality of the clothing is much higher and there are only 20-40 pieces in total. This way, you save time trying to build an outfit and save money because the whole point is keeping the clutter away! Most of the time, there isn’t much variation of the clothing. Neutrals and navys rule the closet, with very few ‘fun’ colored pieces.

what are the basics I need for summer?

I typically don’t wear very many neutrals, but it is always a good place to start. I mean, they are the easiest to style and accessorize! If you are trying to do a closet reset, here is a full list of what I would include, strictly for summer wear.

  1. basic white t-shirt

  2. oversized denim button up (bonus points if it’s thrifted, if you know me!)

  3. black or beige linen pants (bonus points again if they are barrel leg!)

  4. your favorite pair of jeans (blue and white!)

  5. denim shorts

  6. maxi skirt or dress, super easy to dress up or make it casual!

  7. flowy white top

These are just seven of my top favorites, or what I would consider essential! You can add or take away any of the above to match your personal style.

Summer colors

Colors have always been important to me, especially when it comes to seasonal colors and what I am wearing. Personally, I never wear true black in the summertime. If I need a darker color to wear, I always opt for navy or a forest green. Just because it is summer, that doesn’t mean I have to wear yellows, pinks, and blues all of the time. I still experiment with different shades of darker colors while always keeping some part of my outfit lighter or more airy. We have all of fall and winter to wear darker, bolder looks, so let’s focus on the brighter colors here. Spring and summer are also perfect times to have fun and mix and match patterns and colors. Patterns, I know, can be scary sometimes, but it’s important to practice and see what you like, or what how funky you are willing to go. You never know, you might just be the next Iris Apfel!

Personally, I just can’t have the perfectly curated capsule closet. I’m too picky about my colors and textures and patterns. I just love experimenting with bright colors and loud patterns that I can’t be contained to a few beige and black pieces.

with love always, Charli
